43 Masonic

Munich + Geneva / Fort Mason

It starts humbly, in front of Safeway in the Marina, where passengers with little idea the journey their about to take climb aboard.

The engines whir to life and it sets off, popping by Yoda and the Tunnel Tops, it flies up into the beautiful wooded acres of the Presidio, emerging into the riches of Pacific Heights.

It swings down into a neighborhood of graveyards past before zooming down and then up again into the Haight.

Sleepy Cole Valley is greeted. A brief ascent into the clouds made on Mount Sutro, it trundles up ninth avenue before flying up the valley to Forest Hill.

Diving and swooping and climbing, it skitters around Mount Davidson before calling upon BART.

Off it goes, to the far off sounding land of Munich and Geneva, where its grey and red blend into the fog, only to do it all again.

An ode to the greatest bus in the world, by Natalie Makhijani, who once went as the 43 for Halloween. No, there are not pictures.
